Dr. Nancy MacNeill Makes a Lasting Impact at MSMS

When Dr. Nancy MacNeill passed away in 2018, her family was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and tributes from her myriad of former students. Dr. Nancy MacNeill – lovingly referred to as Dr. Mac by most of her students – was an original member of the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science faculty who taught chemistry there for 26 years until she retired in 2014. In 2013, Dr. MacNeill was named MSMS Teacher of the Year. She was also inducted into the Circle of Excellence in College Education at Mississippi State. Dr. Mac was often called the smartest person in the family by her siblings. She possessed a love for learning, reading, and music; and she was passionate about teaching. Her impact is still felt today by former students like Dr. Lib Morgan, who said, “I earned a Ph.D. in chemistry and teach because of Dr. Mac. What a role model, powerhouse, amazing human!”

Dr. MacNeill’s sister, Becky Takayesu, and her family were inspired to honor Dr. Mac for the vast impact she had throughout her teaching career by establishing the Dr. Nancy MacNeill Impact Fund with the MSMS Foundation. Becky shared, “Growing up with Nancy I was always impressed with her intellect, quick wit, and many talents. After meeting her former students and hearing their stories of the impact she had on them, I realized one of Nancy’s strongest attributes was that of an educator and love of the students she taught. Her impact on some of the students and their chosen careers went far beyond what I ever realized. My family is proud to honor her legacy at MSMS by establishing the Dr. Nancy MacNeill Impact Fund to help promote and continue the impact of education that Nancy embodied.”

The establishment of this special fund ensures that Dr. Mac’s impact lives on at MSMS in perpetuity. This fund will be fully endowed over the next five years, and proceeds will be used annually to support the chemistry department and a new faculty impact award.

* Annual servicing of chemistry department equipment will be paid for by this new fund. Dr. Mac insisted on providing students with the most advanced lab experiences available. She purchased some sophisticated equipment when she was teaching at MSMS to be used in the labs by students. These machines require servicing to stay in working order, and some of them had fallen out of use due to a lack of funding. Thanks to the Dr. Nancy MacNeill Impact Fund, those machines have already been added to the labs planned for this spring after the initial servicing was completed.
* The Dr. Nancy MacNeill Faculty Impact Award will be presented each spring to the faculty member selected by the graduating class of MSMS. The seniors will vote for the faculty member they believe most embodies the character and legacy of Dr. Mac. The first award will be presented this year by the MSMS Class of 2023. The teacher will receive a certificate and a monetary award.

3:00-5:00 PM CDT | Screening of “Walter Anderson: The Extraordinary Life and Art of the Islander | First Methodist Church at 602 Main St

Anthony Thaxton, Class of 1991, will host a screening of his documentary on Mississippi artist Walter Anderson, followed by a moderated discussion. Current MSMS students will join us for this special event.

5:00-7:00 PM CDT | Welcome Reception at Columbus Arts Council at 501 Main Street

Join us at the Columbus Arts Council to view the world premiere of the photography exhibition “O. N. Pruitt’s Possum Town,” featuring historical photographs of the Columbus area from the 1920s to 1950s. Curator Berkley Hudson will give remarks and sign copies of the book accompanying the exhibition, and copies of Anthony Thaxton’s book on Walter Anderson will also be available for signing. Heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served.

7 :00-10:00 PM CDT | Tales from the Crypt | Friendship Cemetery at 1300 4th St South

Enjoy the performances of current MSMS students at the 32nd edition of Tales from the Crypt. This reenactment of the lives of Columbus citizens brings history to life while celebrating the talents of MSMS students. A group transportation option will be available. Last entry at 9:00 PM. Admission tickets are provided with event registration.

MSMS Alumni Weekend 2021 will be a milestone celebration for the Classes of 1990,1991, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2016! Our event will be virtual this year to enable everyone to attend and participate safely. The tentative schedule is located below.

Early registration prices will end on March 28th! This is also the date to register to guarantee the delivery of your box. Late registration will be available until April 17th but the delivery of your box prior to the event is not guaranteed.

New MSMS Foundation Executive Director

The MSMS Foundation Board of Directors has named Keith Gaskin as the next Executive Director of the MSMS Foundation. Gaskin began his role with the organization on August 3, 2020.

With 25 years of major gift fundraising experience, Gaskin has held leadership roles in advancement at Mississippi State University, The University of Alabama, and most recently the West Virginia University at Parkersburg among others.

“I am passionate about philanthropy and the importance of STEM education in the state of Mississippi. I look forward to assisting the school in securing the private funds needed to best serve our students,” Gaskin said.

During his career Gaskin has primarily focused his efforts in donor prospect building, developing long-range fundraising goals, cultivating and stewarding donors and closing principal gifts during comprehensive fundraising campaigns.

“We’re thrilled to have Dr. Gaskin join the MSMS Foundation as the Executive Director and excited to see what we can accomplish for MSMS and STEM education in Mississippi with his effort and guidance.“ Cynthia Henderson, President of the MSMS Foundation Board said.

Gaskin holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Mississippi State University. He was named an Institutional Advancement Summer Fellow at Vanderbilt University, Peabody College of Education and has also completed leadership programs at Harvard and Rhodes College.

The MSMS Foundation is a 501 c3 that was established in 1989 to provide support for The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science outside of state funding.

This is a free evening to catch up with your classmates. Restaurant reservations are recommended if you are meeting up with a large group. Huck’s Place downtown and the Jackson Square Grill are popular options.

4/4/2020 Saturday

Childcare: If you purchase a child ticket, it includes a ticket to Tales from the Crypt, lunch on Saturday, and childcare on Saturday evening with pizza. Childcare is being provided at a local church by some of their regular childcare providers. This will be a best fit for children from 6 months to 12 years. Due to the logistics in arranging childcare, you must purchase a ticket by 3/6/20 to obtain a child ticket.

Parking

3/29/2019 Friday

Parking on Friday, March 29 will be available on the campus of the “W” around Hooper and Hogarth Halls. There will be signs put out to help direct attendees. Registration will be available in Hooper Hall for anyone who did not register online until 6pm.

A double decker bus will be available to take some attendees to Tales from the Crypt. The bus only holds about 68 people so please be there early if you plan to ride the bus. The bus will pick up attendees in front of Hogarth Hall and will leave around 6:30-6:45 to head over to the Tales from the Crypt event that starts at 7. In the event of rain, we will use a regular school bus instead of the double decker bus.

3/30/2019 Saturday

Parking details for Saturday morning thru lunch will be the same as for Friday parking, around Hooper and Hogarth halls. Registration will be open until 11:30am Saturday morning in Hooper Hall.

We anticipate that parking for Saturday evening downtown for the Brews, Bites, and Blues event will be more difficult due to other events going on in the area. We have arranged for attendees to be able to park at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church located at 318 College St, Columbus, MS 39701. It’s about 3.5 blocks (walking distance) from the Rosenzweig Arts Center, 501 Main Street, Columbus, MS 39701.

MSMS Alumni Weekend Panelist Spotlight: Dr. Atif Haque

Dr. Haque is a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He is a partner and neurosurgeon at the Fort Worth Brain & Spine Institute and an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He clearly excels at both his profession and taking care of patients as he has been recognized as a ‘Top Doc’ in the Fort Worth Magazine and ‘Top 10 Spine Surgeon in Forth Worth’ by Top10MD.com for the past 5 years. He was also recognized with the ‘Patient’s Choice Award’ and ‘Compassionate Doctor Award’ by Vitals.com for the past six years. He has continued his education as well as education of the public through numerous presentations, scholarly publications, and media appearances related to spine surgery and health.

Following graduation from MSMS, Dr. Haque attended the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. He went on to complete his residency at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center in neurosurgery. We’re honored to have this accomplished neurosurgeon on the panel to share his experiences!

MSMS Alumni Weekend Panelist Spotlight: Sarah Sapp

Ms. Sarah Sapp is a 1999 MSMS alumna and communication specialist and adjunct professor at the University of Mississippi. As an adjunct professor, she teaches coursework in the Integrated Marketing Communications program for the School of Journalism and New Media. As a communications specialist, she is responsible for the design, writing, and production of internal and external integrated marketing communications within the department and for the School of Applied Science. Since 2012, Ms. Sapp has won numerous awards for print media, news stories, advertisements, and public relations campaigns from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations and the College Public Relations Association of Mississippi

After MSMS, Sarah attended the Meek School of Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi and graduated with a Master’s Degree in addition to being inducted into the Kappa Tau Alpha Honor Society. She has also worked as a Special Projects Coordinator for the Mississippi School for the Arts and as Director of Communications for the Northwest Mississippi Community College.

Today, Sarah lives in Oxford, MS, with family. We’re thrilled that Ms. Sapp was able to take time to visit with the MSMS students and speak with them about journalism in the world today.

MSMS Alumni Weekend Panelist Spotlight: Mattie Clay

Ms. Mattie Clay is a 2004 MSMS alumna and patent attorney at Clay IP Law, where she enjoys counseling creators, innovators, businesses, and artists in intellectual property matters. After MSMS, Mattie attended Millsaps College for a year before transferring to Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics. She later attended law school at the University of Iowa College of Law in Iowa City. Prior to opening Clay IP Law, Mattie practiced law in large and mid-sized firms based in Milwaukee, WI.

Today, Mattie lives in Hattiesburg, MS, with her husband Nate Clay, another 2004 MSMS alum. Mattie also serves on the MSMS Foundation board. In her downtime, Mattie enjoys spending time with family and friends, writing, theatre, supporting rising and established creators, and singing with her family’s gospel choir. We’re excited to hear Ms. Clay’s thoughts on life and law post-MSMS.

MSMS Alumni Weekend Panelist Spotlight: Nate Clay

After graduating from MSMS, Mr. Clay attended Grinell College and graduated with a BA in math and economics. He pursued a career as an actuary and risk analyst within the insurance industry. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst, and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

After working for many large insurers such as Transamerica Life, Northwestern Mutal Life, and Protective Life, he now works remotely from his home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, as Assistant Director for Actuarial Client Support for Moody’s Analytics. Moody’s is a software technology firm specializing in rick and financial modeling. He trains and supports clients and other actuaries in using the AXIS actuarial projection software.

He is a member of the MSMS Foundation Board and his interests include music performance and production, reading, and improving financial literacy in minority and underserved communities.

MSMS Alumni Weekend Panelist Spotlight: Joshua Lonthair

After graduating from MSMS, Mr. Lonthair attended Miami University and majored in Marine Science and Biology. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Austin, Marine Science Institute. He has received multiple fellowships and awards from the National Science Foundation, The University of Texas at Austin, and various scientific professional societies. His fellowships have taken him to the corners of the earth with Advance Training Program for Antarctic Research Fellowship – NSF and the East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Fellowship in Taiwan – NSF.

The question that drives his PhD investigations is how environmental changes alter animal physiology. He is currently studying the acid-base physiology of an estuarine teleost, red drum ( Sciaenops ocellatus ), with broader interests in understanding how individuals to populations exhibit differences in plasticity and resilience to external changes in environment.

We’re thrilled that Mr. Lonthair was able to take time out of his academic investigations to join the MSMS Alumni Panel and share her experiences.

MSMS Alumni Weekend Panelist Spotlight: Monica Kala

After graduating from MSMS, Ms. Kala attended Tulane University and graduated Magna Cum Laude in Biomedical Engineering. While at Tulane, she was a research assistant in the cellular biomechanics and biotransport laboratory and completed independent research into the synergistic effects of high intensity focused ultrasound and temperature sensitive liposomes containing chemotherapy on liver and prostate cancer in vivo and in vitro . She also completed a summer research experience for undergraduates in mathematical and computational fluid dynamics.

She is currently in her first year of medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and was the recipient of the Goss-Moffit Scholarship. We’re thankful Ms. Kala was able to take time out of a busy first-year medical student’s life to join the MSMS Alumni Panel and share her experiences.

Passing of Mrs. Helen Perry

Over her time at MSMS, she taught students Advanced Physics, Modern Physics, and Astronomy. She is fondly remembered for her passion for physics and the tractor metaphors that were frequently used to explain physics concepts. She was a great teacher and inspiration who was convinced that all of her students could excel.

MSMS Alumni Weekend 2019 will be a milestone celebration for the Classes of 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014! The tentative schedule is located below. The potential changes (if they happen) would be to the Friday afternoon event with the MSMS students and the Trivia contest on Saturday afternoon. Changes are not anticipated on the other events.

Childcare is being provided at a local church by some of their regular childcare providers. This will be a best fit for children from 6 months to 12 years. Due to the logistics in arranging childcare, you must purchase a ticket by 3/8/19 to obtain a child ticket.
